Mopeds

A moped is a type of motorized vehicle that is very similar to a motorcycle. There are some differences though including the fact that mopeds don't go nearly as fast as a motorcycle and they are designed for in town use because of their low speed. The majority of mopeds don't exceed 30 miles per hour.

In most states you are required to have a specific license for operating a motorcycle but you don't need anything more than a valid driver's license to operate a moped. The maximum classification for a moped is 50 cc. Anything larger than that has to be classified as a motorcycle.

Mopeds were introduced in 1950 with the design being a bicycle with a small motor attached to it. They became very popular in the United States during the fuel crisis of 1974. People had to wait in line for hours to put fuel into their cars. They amount they could purchase at any given time was rationed. The fuel they did get was very expensive as well.

Today mopeds are a very viable mode of transportation in countries throughout the world. People often use them to enjoy the outdoors as well as to save money on fuel costs. You can purchase a moped starting at a couple hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars depending on the model you select and the brand. It will also depend on if you purchase it new or used.

Many parents find purchasing a moped for their teenager is a better alternative to getting them the motorcycle they want. This is often the middle ground for a compromise on the issue to take place.

With the popularity of motorcycle clubs and rallies, the concept of moped rallies and events is catching on in various locations. Of course since they travel at slow speeds they aren't designed for a highway run, but many moped clubs take leisurely rides along a river or other location.

Even though mopeds are slower than motorcycles, it is still important to wear proper safety equipment when you operate or ride on one. This includes a helmet and eye protection. It is also recommended to wear full pants and a long sleeved shirt in case you have an accident to prevent road rash.
